Hospitals Help Patients Save Money and Win Prizes
In an effort to spread the word and sign up more patients for its Downeast Medication Assistance Program, Luann Corkins of WHCA conducted a contest to see which medical facility could sign up the most new participants. Patricia Buccello of Mount Desert Island Hospital was the lucky winner of a laptop computer, printer and three palm pilots for her organization's success in signing up 50 new DeMAP participants.
DeMAP uses special software to connect patients with available free or low-cost prescription medications, saving local residents thousands of dollars each year. The program is funded by a grant for the Maine Health Access Foundation.
WHCA is a non-profit community action program founded in 1966 and incorporated in 1972 as a private 501(c) 3 organization. With a mission to "bring community resources together to help people in Washington and Hancock counties achieve self-sufficiency and a better quality of life," WHCA helps thousands of local residents each year with everything from food and heating assistance to small business start-up and tax preparation.
