Helping Hands Garage Celebrates 5 Years
There will be a celebration with music and food in honor of Helping Hands Garage fifth anniversary on Tuesday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at WHCA's offices in Ellsworth. We hope to have a quality used car to give away to someone who has come to HHG for help, but hasn't gotten a car yet. If we receive a vehicle donation, there will be a drawing from names of applicants to the program and the lucky winner will drive away with a "new" used car.
HHG helps income-eligible working people find and finance vehicles with the goal of providing transportation to work. Since its inception five years ago, HHG has helped more than 100 families and individuals obtain low cost, reliable used vehicles. Carpenters, laborers, secretaries, nursing assistants, grocery store clerks, restaurant workers, delivery men, and veterinary assistants have all come to us looking for a car or a truck to get them to their jobs.
Some of them have gotten better jobs as a result of participating in the HHG program. Robert had a low paying job in a fast-food restaurant near his home. After he got his vehicle through HHG, he was able to commute to a better-paying job at a local hospital. William was working nights as a stock clerk at a big-box store. Because of the vehicle he got through HHG, he didn't need to ride share anymore and was able to get a job working for the school system. He is now taking business classes through Beal College to improve his chances for an even better position.
The anniversary celebration will be held at 248 Bucksport Road in Ellsworth. If you have a vehicle you'd like to donate or you'd like more information about the event, call Bobby Kane at 667-4763.
