Realtors Make Donation to Senior Safe

Jamie O'Keefe and Joe Perkins

Washington Hancock Community Agency will be able to make nearly $3,000 worth of safety improvements in local seniors' homes, thanks to the Hancock-Washington Board of REALTORS® (HWBOR). The funds go to the Senior Safe program which makes necessary safety improvements to prevent falls, such as adding handrails, repairing steps and installing ramps to make homes more accessible to those with impaired mobility.

HWBOR's annual raffle proceeds were donated to WHCA's Senior Safe program at the board's monthly meeting on January 21 at Jasper's in Ellsworth. The raffle itself raised $1,846 with an additional $1,000 in matching funds given by the Maine Association of Realtors' Affordable Housing Fund.

Raffle tickets were sold throughout the summer and fall at various venues, including Sullivan Daze, the Salmon Fest in Eastport and Autumn Gold in Ellsworth. The drawing was held in October. The grand prize was an Old Town Vapor kayak valued at $675. The manufacturer, Johnson Outdoors, sold the kayak to the Realtors at a significant discount. Other prizes were donated by Scenic Flights of Acadia, Union River Lobster Pot, Maine Needhams, Nervous Nellie's Jams & Jellies, New Cargoes, the Grasshopper Shop and Chester Pike's Galley. The First, Machias Savings Bank and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust made monetary donations to the raffle.

"Businesses were so generous despite the economy. Everyone recognized what a worthy cause this was," said Jamie O'Keefe, HWBOR President. "It's great to know that the money we raised is helping seniors right here in our own community."

HWBOR is a local nonprofit organization formed under the auspices and by-laws of the National Association of REALTORS® to provide its members with the services and resources needed to succeed in a professional and ethical manner.

Senior Safe is a program of Washington Hancock Community Agency, a nonprofit organization. For more information about Senior Safe, contact WHCA's Housing Services division at 546-7544.
